The celebrated London filmmaker PHIL GRABSKY is returning to Avoca Beach Picture Theatre with the next instalment in classical music series. Phil's fascinating & informative films IN SEARCH OF MOZART & IN SEARCH OF BEETHOVEN were both highly acclaimed and greatly enjoyed and Phil now gives us IN SEARCH OF HAYDN.
Haydn (1723-1809) was one of the greatest musical innovators. Mozart and Beethoven greatly looked up to him as Papa Haydn and yet today in concert halls he is often overshadowed in favour of his younger contemporaries.
By speaking to the greatest living exponents of Haydn's music, this film intends to readdress the balance and to shed light on this forgotten master and his work With simplicity and lucidity, Phil takes us on a chronological journey of Joseph Haydn's life and work, giving us the reasons why we should still care about him. Unlike Mozart and Beethoven, Haydn was very much of the people and for the people, wanting to please audiences with a feeling of sensitivity and refinement and sheer enjoyment.
Part of the success of the film lies in the very intelligent and authoritative people – musicians, conductors, historians – and letting them tell us what they know best. The film features Alison Balsom, The Orchestra of the 18th Century, Marc Andre Hamelin, Ronald Brautigam, Emanuel Ax as well as many other classical contributors.
EARTHEN MELODIES classical string trio led by Kim Cannan, will perform some of Haydn's work before the screening.
PHIL GRABSKY himself is flying in from London. Having made fast friends with the patrons of Avoca Beach Picture Theatre, he is returning to introduce IN SEARCH OF HAYDN and take the audience's questions directly after the screening.
Phil Grabsky will be at Avoca Beach Picture Theatre on Thursday 8th March from 7pm for the screening of IN SEARCH OF HADYN after EARTHEN MELODIES performs Haydn's work.
